Dryer vent cleaning in South Florida
Dryer vent cleaning in South Florida is the least glamorous service we offer and the one with the clearest safety case. A blocked vent costs you time on every load and money on every bill. That is the small version of the problem. The large version is that packed lint is fuel sitting next to a heating element.
Failure to clean is the leading cause of dryer fires
Roughly a third of home clothes-dryer fires trace back to it, according to the National Fire Protection Association. It is also one of the few household fire risks you can remove almost entirely in under an hour.
How it happens
The lint trap only catches part of it
Every load sheds fibre. The screen catches the coarse material. The fine stuff rides the airflow into the duct behind the machine and settles wherever the air slows down: at the first bend, at joints, and at the exterior cap.
The duct narrows
Lint clings to the duct wall, starting at the first bend behind the dryer. The opening gets smaller with every load.
Airflow drops
Less air escapes, so moisture stays in the drum. Clothes come out damp and you run a second cycle.
The machine runs hotter
Longer cycles and restricted exhaust mean the heating element works harder and the cabinet holds more heat.
Heat meets fuel
Compacted lint is dry, fine and highly combustible, and it is now sitting in a hot, enclosed space.
Counterintuitive
Why a newer dryer makes it worse
This one surprises people. Older machines ran on a timer. Forty minutes was forty minutes, whether the clothes were dry or not.
Newer machines use moisture sensors. The sensor does not know the vent is blocked. It only knows the clothes are still wet, so it keeps going. A restricted vent makes a modern dryer run longer than an old one would to reach the same result. Better technology, worse outcome, higher bill.
So if you replaced the dryer and the drying problem did not go away, the machine was never the problem.
Signs
Your dryer is already telling you
Almost nobody calls about a dryer vent until laundry becomes annoying. If you are in a managed building, see how we handle association access. The annoyance is the early warning, and it usually shows up months before anything worse.
The easiest test you can do yourself: run the dryer, go outside, hold your hand near the vent. You should feel a strong, warm flow. A weak trickle means the line is restricted.
Worth acting on
- Clothes still damp after a full cycle
- The dryer or the laundry room is hot to stand next to
- Little or no air at the exterior vent while the dryer runs
- A burning or scorched smell during a cycle, this is not an early sign
- Lint appearing around the door seal or behind the machine
- The exterior cap rusted, stuck open, or missing its flap
- It has never been professionally cleaned
Local conditions
What salt air does to the exterior cap
If you are near the Intracoastal, a canal, or the beach, the cap is the part that fails first. Salt corrodes the flap and the hinge, and a cap that rusts open stops being a vent and starts being an opening.
Birds nest in it. Rain gets in. Wet lint packs harder than dry lint and is far more difficult to clear. It is a cheap part causing an expensive problem, which is why we check it on every visit and tell you when it is going rather than waiting for you to find out.

Shared risers change the job
Much of Broward coastal housing puts the dryer in a closet, and that changes the work in three ways: the run is longer, the installation is tighter, and you may be sharing the exhaust with other units.
A crushed duct restricts airflow permanently and no amount of cleaning fixes it. It needs replacing, and we will tell you if that is what we find rather than cleaning around it.
What to know about your building
- Some buildings run individual lines to the roof, others tie several units into a shared riser
- On a shared riser your airflow depends partly on your neighbours and on building maintenance
- Cleaning your section still helps, but it is worth knowing which arrangement you have
- Worth raising with the association if the riser has never been serviced
- Tell us about certificates of insurance, vendor registration or elevator windows when you book

Can you do it yourself?
Partly, and we will say so plainly. A brush kit from a hardware store will clear the first few feet behind the machine. If that is where your buildup is, you have solved it and you do not need us.
The problem is that the buildup that matters usually is not there. It is at the bends, in the run through the wall or ceiling, and at the exterior cap, which on a two-storey house may be at roof level. That is where store-bought kits stop reaching, and it is why a line that has been cleaned by hand can still fail an airflow test.
